Burton upon Trent – also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a long town straddling the River Trent to the east of Staffordshire. The demonym for residents of the town is “burtonians”. Burton has a population of 44,000 and lies within the national forest. The town originally grew up around Burton on Trent Abbey, which was the most important religious centre in medieval Staffordshire at its time.

Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, having been the home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. Beer is still brewed in the town. The towns connection with the brewing industry is celebrated in “The Burton Cooper” a bronze sculpture by James Walter Butler. It was commissioned in 1977 and depicts a local craftsman making a barrel. It originally stood opposite the market, but was moved to its current location in the indoor shopping centre followings its re-vamp in 1994.

The town is still currently home to 8 breweries; Coors Breweries Ltd ( formerly Bass ), Molson Coors ( who produce Carling and Worthingtons ), Marstons and Punch being the most notable names. It is fair to say that the economy of the town is still dominated by the brewing / pub industry or by product there of – the most notable being Marmite – which on a warm day……..you can smell from quite a way away !!!

There remains confusion as to whether Burton is in the West Midlands or the East Midlands, even though the entire urban centre is south-west of the River Dove, which forms Derbyshire/ Staffordshire boundary. However, the town has more similarities with the East Midlands, being reliant upon the east for its utility supply and it also adopts the DE ( Derby ) postcodes.
